Throughout history religious jewelry has played a significant role in culture and civilization.
Items of jewelry have been symbols of superstition and religious belief, wealth and status all through the different periods of history encompassing all the continents and cultures of the world.
In ancient Egypt religious jewelry was symbolic and extravagant. Made
of gold and precious stones, it was worn by men and women alike. When the Roman era arrived, religious jewelry included more Christian symbols and was made of cheaper materials. Then when Islam arrived in Egypt, men were forbidden to wear gold jewelry, and as a result, silver jewelry became more acceptable.
When the Roman Empire became Christianized,
symbols including the cross, the rosary, and the Christian fish charm were created and have endured through time and are still used in Christian art and jewelry today. Rosary beads are also used in the Islam and Buddhist faith.
To the Native American religious jewelry made from natural materials such as feathers, turquoise and silver were symbols for nature, and were used
in their religious ceremonies. Religious jewelry represented the different stages of life entered into by individuals. This jewelry and ceremonies represented a significant part of the Native American culture.
In today’s culture the religious aspects of jewelry is less important and gaudy and tacky mass-produced Modern Christian jewelry has largely replaced the
religious role of the jewelry. Jewelry made out of almost every material known has adorned nearly every part of the human body and includes toe rings to tiaras and everything in between.
